Wynwood's 50-block canvas emerged from a forgotten warehouse district when developer Tony Goldman commissioned seven murals in 2009. What began as six exterior walls at 2520 NW 2nd Avenue became the catalyst for 200,000 square feet of aerosol art across a neighborhood the city had written off. Within five years, real-estate values tripled, craft breweries moved into former textile warehouses, and Shepard Fairey painted a 180-foot portrait of a Seminole elder on NW 26th Street. The golf cart format arose from necessity. Wynwood's 18-square-block core contains more than 70 major murals, galleries anchored in renovated 1920s industrial buildings, and a half-dozen microbreweries operating from converted truck bays. Walking the circuit in Miami's humidity requires three hours and significant stamina. Electric carts condense the geography, stopping at works by Kobra, Vhils, and Os Gemeos while threading through corridors too narrow for tour buses. The brewery component reflects Wynwood's dual identity: J. Wakefield and Concrete Beach opened in 2015, transforming the district into South Florida's densest concentration of independent brewers. Murals here operate on six-month to two-year lifespans. Wynwood Walls commissions repaints during Art Basel each December, while the surrounding blocks see organic turnover as artists claim available surfaces. A 2023 installation by Aiko covered four stories on NW 2nd Avenue; by mid-2025, RISK had overpainted half of it. This impermanence makes documentation valuable. The tours photograph works that may vanish before the next season, capturing Pose's throw-ups on NW 25th before weather or a new artist erases them. Brewery stops provide context breaks—10-minute tastings at each location, usually two per route—while guides explain why a particular wall earned protection or why another remains fair game for overnight repainting.
